Cartridge Gauge Bell w/ Dial Indicator

One of the quick and easy ways to check to see if a cartridge will chamber is to use a Case or Cartridge Gauge such as the ones produced by L.E Wilson. The gauge is a miniature chamber that checks to make sure that your cartridge will chamber smoothly in any gun you intend to fire it from. However, we can also use these gauges to measure how a cartridge will headspace in your firearm. This is done by using the Cartridge Gage Bell.

You can use this tool to tell you the following measurements.

  1. How much your cases stretch during firing
  2. The amount of shoulder set back you are getting with your sizing die
  3. Changes in shoulder set back due to die adjustment
  4. Monitoring the consistency of your sizing process

Instructions

  1. Use the Included 1in Diameter Pin to Zero the dial indicator by setting the 1in gauge pin on a flat surface and placing the cartridge gauge bell over the pin.
    1. The reference zero can be adjusted by turning the face of the dial to where the needle is pointing.
    2. If you wish the adjust the angle of the pin on the dial, loosen the set screw on the cartridge bell and raise or lower the dial indicator to adjust the angle of the needle.
    3. Hold the dial steady as you retighten the set screw, and then make any desired adjustments to the reference zero by turning the dial face.
  2. For the best results we recommend taking measurements on unprimed / deprimed brass or brass which has a freshly seated primer that is properly seated below the case head as the spent primer often sits proud of the case head. We also recommend inspecting the cases for any burr that might have been raised on the case head by the extractor.
    1. Removing burrs on the head of the cartridge case can be done using a very fine 1000 grit sandpaper. Place the paper on a flat surface and hold the case head squarely on the sandpaper. It typically only takes a few passes. A light oil, such as a drop of gun oil on the sandpaper makes this process even easier.
  1. Place a shell in your cartridge gauge seating it with light finger (not Thumb) pressure and set them on a flat surface. Place the gauge bell over the Cartridge Gage, the bell automatically aligns the probe of the dial indicator over the center of the cartridge case.
  1. The reading on the dial indicator will tell you how far the case sits above or below the rim of the case gauge.

This gage may be used with any cartridge or case gauge that has a diameter between 1.00 and .950 inches. This includes all of L.E Wilson Gauges.
