Wilson Expanding Mandrels
The Wilson Expanding Mandrels are a necessary part when using the Wilson Expanding Mandrel Die. When you purchase the die, one mandrel for the caliber of your choice is included with the die. If you want to use the die with other calibers, you must order additional mandrels. These mandrels when used with the Expanding Die can be used to straighten NEW brass cases prior to the seating operation. They can also in a secondary step along with bushing dies and standard sizing dies to ensure that the inside diameter of the cases are consistent with each other. This important step can make sure bullet grip is equal for all your rounds which converts over to more consistent chamber pressures and thus improves accuracy.
New brass cases whether bulk or high-end carefully packaged brass inevitably have dents or creases in the case neck. These mandrels when used in the die can iron out and straighten the necks prior to first loading. Many reloaders also use these mandrels to expand cases from a smaller caliber to a larger caliber. Usually done with one progression at a time. (example – 6 mm opened up to 6.5 mm). You are ordering a mandrel only. You must have the Wilson Expanding Die to use this mandrel.
The most important function of these mandrels is worth repeating! It makes sure your case neck tension/bullet grip is as consistent as possible from round to round which will improve your standard deviation and precision grouping at the target.
